Labyrinth
2018
Labyrinth is a sculptural costume piece developed to articulate visceral health and embodiment, with accompanying feelings of isolation, vulnerability, meditation, play, creation, birth, and connection. A textile woven labyrinth of "entrails" becomes a breastplate that is both protective and permeable. Through an opening at the navel, delicate strings of viscera roll out to become a community jump-rope (interacting with volunteer audience, or cast members on stage) as well as a length to climb with power, exposure and responsibility. The piece ends in an aerial image called “Alienhead”, a relaxed seated posture with a beehive wrap concealing my face and visual merging with the lines made by the costume.
Performance developed in part through "Circus Sessions", a creative incubator produced by Femmes de Feu and led by artist mentor Marie-Andree Robitaille at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, Toronto, ON, as well as in residence at Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. Performance footage for works-in-progress viewing. Material/ Technique: Nylon lining fabric, cotton welting, remnant fabrics, buttons, live performance, aerial rope.
